Safari Minus The Schedule: Luxury Reimagined At Bushtops
Luxury travel has certainly evolved in recent years. Today’s discerning traveller is looking beyond lavish accommodation and fine cuisine. Increasingly, true luxury is defined by something far rarer: freedom. The freedom to wake up when you choose, dine when you are hungry, linger longer at a specific sighting, or spend an uninterrupted evening beneath the stars without watching the clock.
It’s also the freedom to escape the crowds, perhaps travelling off peak in the green or shoulder seasons, and having access to areas of pristine wilderness a little off the beaten track.
This freedom to be flexible really sets Bushtops Camps apart. Most safari lodges, even the top end ones, still operate around a fixed safari schedule and shared game drives, whilst Bushtops prides itself on offering something more personal and exclusive — a safari entirely on your own terms.
From having your very own private safari vehicle included with every booking at no extra charge, to completely flexible dining arrangements and personalised daily itineraries, Bushtops has redefined what an exclusive safari feels like. The result is an unhurried, deeply personal journey through the wilderness where every detail adapts to each guest, rather than the other way around.

Your Own Private Safari Vehicle for Every Booking
One of the greatest luxuries on safari is privacy. At Bushtops, every non-solo booking includes a private safari vehicle with a dedicated guide and tracker. This single detail transforms the game viewing experience.
A private vehicle allows guests to shape every moment according to their individual interests and mood. Wildlife photographers may wish to spend an hour observing a leopard draped elegantly across an acacia branch in the Serengeti. Twitchers might spend all day searching for one particular feathered friend!
Families travelling with children may prefer shorter drives interspersed with a few lie-ins, leisurely breakfasts and poolside relaxation. Honeymooners may wish to enjoy romantic sundowners in their hot tub – or watch the sunset from our infinity star pool at the Amani spa after an indulgent couples’ massage.
There is no pressure to accommodate strangers, to engage in small talk – and no compromise on timing or sense of being hurried along. Your safari unfolds naturally, at your chosen pace.
This level of flexibility is particularly valuable in destinations such as the Masai Mara and Serengeti, where wildlife encounters are often unpredictable and magical moments deserve time and patience. A lion pride on the move, elephants crossing the savannah at sunset or cheetahs preparing for a hunt are experiences best enjoyed without constraints.
Or if you’re anything like me, you love to stop and watch monkeys at play!
For many guests, the inclusion of a private safari vehicle becomes the defining feature of their stay — an expression of effortless luxury that quietly elevates every aspect of the journey.
What a Day on Safari Looks Like: Safari at Your Own Pace
The modern luxury traveller values personalisation above all else. Increasingly, travellers seek tailor-made safari experiences that feel curated around their own rhythm rather than dictated by lodge schedules.
At Bushtops, there is no rigid template for the day. We enjoy the wild without a watch! We also don’t have any gate times to adhere to in the Isaaten Conservancy, so if you want to jump back on your vehicle after dinner to search for nocturnal predators using our heat-seeking night-vision floor camera, that choice is yours!
Some guests rise before dawn to experience the bush awakening in the soft golden light of morning. Others prefer a slower start, enjoying coffee on their private deck while watching wildlife. Some spend hours exploring the wilderness, while others balance game drives with spa treatments, wine tastings or afternoons simply immersed in the beauty of the camp.
This flexibility creates a safari experience that feels deeply restorative rather than exhausting.
Unlike conventional safaris where guests may feel rushed from one activity to another, Bushtops encourages spontaneity and freedom. If a remarkable wildlife sighting unfolds unexpectedly, there is no need to leave because of another group’s schedule or an impending dining time. Guests can remain immersed in the moment for as long as they wish.
This philosophy of unhurried luxury is increasingly rare, even among premium safari brands. It reflects a deeper understanding of what sophisticated travellers truly value: space, privacy and the freedom to experience Africa in an authentic and personal way.

Dining on Safari: No Fixed Mealtimes
Another hallmark of the Bushtops experience is the absence of rigid dining schedules.
At Bushtops, dining revolves around the guest.
Breakfast may be enjoyed after an early morning drive or later in the day following a relaxed morning. Lunch can be a leisurely multi-course affair overlooking the plains or a lighter meal between activities. Dinner may begin beneath the stars after sundowners rather than at a predetermined hour.
This flexibility allows the day to flow naturally and enhances the sense of exclusivity and comfort.
The culinary experience itself reflects the same philosophy of refinement and personalisation. Fresh ingredients, elegant presentation and attentive service combine to create a fine dining safari experience that feels sophisticated yet relaxed. Guests are not merely dining according to a timetable; they are enjoying moments thoughtfully woven into the rhythm of their journey.
For travellers accustomed to high-end international hospitality, this adaptability feels both intuitive and luxurious. Unlike most safari lodges, dining at Bushtops is all on “a la carte” basis offering continental cuisine and there is a separate menu with local cuisine which we call “the taste of our home.” I tried it and absolutely loved every morsel I tried. Also, their chefs are very flexible and will prepare special meals on request.
I tested this out myself at Mara Bushtops – ordering a simple chicken mayonnaise sandwich which was not on the menu – which arrived just minutes later, complete with a delicious side salad which I enjoyed right down by the saltlick as giraffes strolled past and the zebras rolled in the sand besides the fire pit! Magical!
As long as required ingredients are in camp, or growing in the veggie garden … anything is possible!
Gourmet Private Dining, Wherever the Wilderness Inspires
Perhaps nowhere is the spirit of Bushtops more beautifully expressed than in its diverse and imaginative dining locations.
Luxury on safari should never feel confined to a dining room. Instead, meals become experiences in themselves — immersive moments that connect guests to the surrounding landscape.
One morning may begin with a bush breakfast in the open savannah as hot air balloons drift silently overhead. Another evening may unfold around a lantern-lit table beneath the African sky, accompanied by the distant sounds of hyenas and lions in the night. Sundowners may be served atop scenic kopjes overlooking golden grasslands, while private dinners on secluded decks offer intimacy and tranquillity.
I particularly enjoyed our surprise bush breakfast for two after our hike to the Kakiya Caves at Mara Bushtops – and the sundowners on Simba’s Rock in the Serengeti were simply unforgettable!
These moments create lasting emotional memories precisely because they feel spontaneous and incredibly personal.
Private dining safari experiences are often requested and sought-after among luxury travellers, particularly honeymooners, families and multigenerational groups seeking exclusivity and connection. At Bushtops, such experiences are not treated as occasional extras but as an integral part of the philosophy of personalised safari hospitality.
The wilderness itself becomes part of the table setting.

Effortless Luxury and Intuitive Service
True luxury is rarely loud or overly formal. Instead, it is felt through ease, anticipation and thoughtful detail.
What distinguishes Bushtops is not simply the elegance of its safari suites or the beauty of its locations, but the intuitive manner in which every element adapts seamlessly to the guest.
To Sum Up My Own Personal Bushtops Experience In One Word … Faultless!
Service here feels personal rather than scripted. Staff quickly understand individual preferences, whether that means arranging a surprise private dinner, preparing a preferred wine or cocktail at sunset or adjusting activities according to guests’ energy and interests.
My personal butler at Mara Bushtops noticed that my trainers and sandals were a bit dusty on our first night while I was at dinner and they miraculously appeared the next day, all clean and sparkling without me even thinking to ask … like magic!
This creates an atmosphere of warmth and authenticity rather than rigid formality.
For many travellers, this is the future of luxury safari travel: experiences that combine exceptional comfort with genuine emotional connection and flexibility. Increasingly, affluent travellers are moving away from standardised luxury and towards highly personalised journeys that feel unique to them. Bushtops captures this evolution beautifully.
Why Flexibility Is the Ultimate Luxury on Safari
In today’s world, time has become one of the greatest luxuries of all. Modern travellers seek experiences that allow them to slow down, reconnect and escape the pressures of schedules and routines.
A flexible, unscripted safari offers precisely that.
Rather than adhering to timetables, guests can surrender to the rhythm of nature itself. Days unfold organically according to wildlife movements, weather, mood and curiosity. The experience becomes immersive rather than structured.
This sense of freedom transforms a safari from a holiday into something far more meaningful.
At Bushtops, luxury is not measured solely by thread counts, wine cellars or lavish interiors — although those exist in abundance. It is measured by the ability to create a safari that feels entirely your own.
A private safari vehicle for every booking. No fixed dining times. Exceptional dining in extraordinary locations. Personalised service and complete flexibility.
These are not simply amenities. They are expressions of a philosophy, twenty years in the making, that places Bushtops guests at the centre of every experience.
And in the world of luxury safari Africa travel, that level of freedom is perhaps the greatest luxury of all. I feel extremely privileged to have been lucky enough to have been a Bushtops guest.
