Black rhinos are magnificent beasts, elusive and scarce, making any sighting a truly special occasion. Though, the opportunity to see black rhinos in the wild nowadays is the result of far-sighted wildlife management, which has saved this species from the brink of extinction.
In the 1990s, the Moru Kopjes area of the Serengeti National Park was home to just three black rhinos, down from a staggering 700 twenty years earlier. But in 1995, the Serengeti Rhino Project was launched, and the Michael Grzimek Memorial Rhino Post was established to protect these majestic animals from poachers.
During the year of 2019, nine new rhinos were introduced to the area to boost the breeding program and encourage genetic diversity. Thanks to these efforts, there are now over 50 black rhinos in the 3500 square kilometers that the rangers patrol and monitor.
