Most Manyatta (Masai villages) have many small children, who are expected to contribute to the life of the village, collecting firewood, repairing the mud huts, and in the case of the boys, husbanding livestock. However, it is vital that Masai communities also receive an education, so that they are not left behind or unable to balance traditions with progress.

Background

Mara Bushtops has made a particular effort to support our nearest school, four kilometres from the camp. More than 800 pupils, aged from pre-school to 18, attend Nkoilale School. There are only 14 government-paid teachers, assisted by four teachers sponsored by parents. Our funds, and generous sponsorship from participating guests, has been able to transform the school in recent years.

Highlights

Together we have:

  • sponsored 60 children’s schooling and boarding since 2010 (helping girls in particular overcome cultural barriers to education)
  • piped water from a spring six kilometres away
  • helped with teaching assignments such as food hygiene and preparation
  • supported an environmental club (enabling the children to participate in game drives, and planting 850 trees)
  • initiated a mentoring programme, promoting awareness about gender equality and balance in the community
  • funded and refurbished a classroom to create a computer lab, now equipped with 12 computers
  • collaborated with Chloride Exide who donated a state of the art solar system, providing lighting and power for the computer lab and the rest of the school
  • donated a new classroom within a new 3-classroom block
  • helped to fund the ongoing building of a new dining hall (one guest contributed €5,000 towards this project)

How Guests Can Contribute

Sponsorship Program

We are currently supporting 44 young boarders at the School. If you would like to become a sponsor, we would be delighted to talk through how this works, when you visit. It costs US$195 to sponsor a boy or girl’s boarding for a full year and of course one-off donations are always welcome, particularly to help fund the dining hall construction project.

Pack for a Purpose

If you would like to bring something for the schoolchildren on your visit, there is always a shortage of staple supplies, like pens and paper, clothes and footballs, etc.

We are proud members of Pack for a Purpose, an initiative that allows travelers like you to make a lasting impact in the community at your travel destination. If you save just a few kilos of space in your suitcase and bring supplies for area schools or medical clinics in need, you’ll make a priceless impact in the lives of our local children and families.
